Why running a small business isn’t for the faint-hearted

Are the owners of small businesses under more stress than anybody else? Along with what impact could this stress have? These are questions that Business Insider recently covered in a rather chilling feature story. The story illustrates just how stressful running a small business can be. And it shows how tragic the end results are when that stress proves overwhelming.

Ecomom

The Business Insider feature focuses on the story of Ecomom as a cautionary tale. The business started by entrepreneur Jody Sherman, and it appeared to have found a niche providing environmentally friendly products for children. Unfortunately, the business eventually started losing money. Sherman ended up shooting himself. Soon after Sherman’s death, Ecomom shut down. It’s back online again, with a new owner. But did the stress of running this company lead to Sherman’s suicide?

A cautionary tale?

Few jobs provide as much pressure as running a business. The competition is crazy in a good economy. In a sluggish one? It’s even more difficult for small businesses to survive as consumers hesitate to spend their cash. Even prosperous businesses come with stress. You’ll find long hours and big decisions to make. There will always be competitors who wish to take your customers.

The roller coaster

As the Business Insider story says, operating a small business is like riding a roller coaster. One day you’re riding high. The next a problem sends you plummeting. The stress that this places on entrepreneurs is intense. The message here? Running a business may be part of the old-fashioned American dream. But entrepreneurs should take care: It’s not an easy task, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. Make running your small business easier on you by hiring a small business managed IT company.
